Ponant Expedition Cruises: The Complete Guide to Luxury Polar Adventures

There are cruises. And then there are luxury expedition cruises to the ends of the earth aboard the world's only luxury icebreaker, where you walk side by side with emperor penguins on Antarctic sea ice and watch polar bears drift past at 89 degrees north. That is what Ponant does — and there is nothing else quite like it in the world of luxury travel.

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting an exclusive live event with Ponant’s North American Photo Ambassador Cindy Miller Hopkins and Southeast Regional Director of Business Development Xavier Salinas. With over 300 days aboard Le Commandant Charcot alone, Cindy is one of the most experienced polar expedition guides in the world. The conversation was packed with practical advice, stunning destination insights, and the kind of passionate expertise that only comes from someone who has truly lived these experiences.

We’ve pulled together the highlights so you can explore Ponant’s polar world — and decide if your next great adventure lies north or south of the ice line.

Why Ponant Leads in Luxury Expedition Cruising

Ponant is a French expedition cruise line founded in 1988, operating a fleet of 12 small luxury ships covering all seven continents and more than 450 ports of call. But what truly sets Ponant apart isn’t the numbers — it’s the philosophy.

“All the adventure, none of the hardship.” That’s how Cindy describes the Ponant experience, and it captures it perfectly. You are going somewhere extraordinary, somewhere most travelers will never see — but you are doing it in comfort, with world-class French cuisine, open bars, Starlink Wi-Fi, and a fully all-inclusive experience that leaves nothing to chance.

The crown jewel of the fleet is Le Commandant Charcot — the world’s only luxury polar icebreaker. Built specifically for science and exploration, she carries a Polar Class 2 rating (the highest of any passenger ship ever built), can travel on battery power sailing silently alongside fin whales in Antarctica, break through pack ice up to 8.5 feet thick, and deliver you to places that are, quite literally, uncharted territory.

Arctic vs. Antarctica: Choosing Your Luxury Polar Cruise

One of the most common misconceptions about polar travel is that the Arctic and Antarctica are interchangeable. They are not — and knowing the difference will help you choose the expedition cruise that’s right for you.

The Arctic: Culture, Wildlife & Polar Bears

When you sail north — to Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Svalbard, Alaska, or Canada — you enter a world defined by indigenous culture and endemic wildlife. The Arctic is home to people who have lived there for thousands of years. On a Ponant Arctic expedition, you will visit native communities, participate in dog sledding, and interact with cultures that exist nowhere else on earth.

And of course, there are polar bears. Ponant’s naturalist teams have never returned from a North Pole cruise without sighting these magnificent animals. Most bear encounters happen from the ship or the Zodiacs, meaning that even guests with limited mobility can experience these awe-inspiring moments.

Other wildlife to watch for in the Arctic: walrus, reindeer, musk oxen, arctic fox, and harp seals.

Antarctica: Penguins, Ice & Explorer History

Antarctica is a different world entirely — vast, silent, and staggeringly beautiful. The Antarctic mountain range frames the continent in ways that surprise first-time visitors who expect nothing but flat white ice. What you actually find is one of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet.

Wildlife in the south centers on penguins — 18 species worldwide, with several found only here — along with Weddell seals, elephant seals, fur seals, crab-eater seals, and the apex predator of the Southern Ocean: the leopard seal. You will also encounter the remnants of the great polar explorer era, including the preserved huts of Shackleton and Scott’s expeditions.

One key rule: polar bears live only in the north. Penguins live only in the south. No matter what you see on social media, there is no expedition cruise where you encounter both — unless you are circumnavigating the globe.

Best Antarctica Expedition Cruises: Cindy's Three Top Picks

With six emperor penguin expeditions under her belt and years of experience across the continent, Cindy has a clear point of view on where to go and why.

Le Commandant Charcot Navigating new frontiers
1. The Classic Antarctic Peninsula (10–12 Nights)

If you are new to Antarctica or working with limited time, a classic western peninsula itinerary is the perfect introduction.

Show more info

About 80% of all Antarctic visitors go here — and for good reason. Trips depart from Buenos Aires, with a charter flight to Ushuaia where you board the ship. Cindy’s tip: look for departures with Explorers Club guest lecturers, which add an extra layer of education and science at no additional cost.

2. Weddell Sea Emperor Penguin Expedition (October–November)

This is the experience Cindy considers truly once-in-a-lifetime — and it is only possible aboard Le Commandant Charcot.

Emperor penguins nest below the Antarctic Circle, which means reaching them requires a luxury icebreaker. Ponant is the only company offering an emperor penguin cruise without the use of a helicopter, which is better for the environment and far better for the penguins.

When conditions allow, the Charcot parks its bow directly onto the sea ice. From there, guests walk — literally on frozen ocean — to the colony at Snow Hill Island. The penguins, never having been hunted, have no fear of humans. They come to you.

The October–November timing is intentional: emperor penguin chicks are newly hatched at that point, while every other Antarctic species is still sitting on eggs. If seeing emperor penguins is your goal, this Weddell Sea expedition is your voyage. Ponant has four departures planned for 2027.

3. Circumnavigation of Antarctica (60 Nights, 2028)

For the true explorer, Ponant is offering a complete circumnavigation of Antarctica — 60 nights split into two 30-night segments, beginning January 2028 from Ushuaia to Hobart, Tasmania, and back.

This is exceedingly rare: Ponant may be the only ship visiting the eastern side of Antarctica in 2028, sailing into territories so remote that Zodiacs are sometimes deployed ahead of the ship to take soundings because the waters are uncharted.

Space is extremely limited and departures are close to sold out. If this speaks to you, the time to act is now.

North Pole Cruise 2027: What to Expect Aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Cindy has been to the North Pole seven times and is heading back for four more departures this season. She describes it as unlike anything else in the world of travel.
Ponant’s 2027 North Pole season runs July through September aboard Le Commandant Charcot, specifically designed in response to demand from North American travelers seeking a shorter format: 12 nights, roundtrip from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, reaching 90 degrees north. Roundtrip airfare from Paris to Longyearbyen is included.

What to expect on a North Pole expedition cruise:

  • Daily activities in the ice — skiing, snowshoeing, polar hikes (short, medium, and long), ice fishing, and Zodiac excursions
  • Polar bear sightings — virtually guaranteed on every departure, with Zodiac excursions for closer encounters when conditions allow
  • Northern lights — available on early and late-season departures when darkness returns; July sailings offer 24-hour midnight sun instead
  • Reaching the Geographic North Pole — celebrated with French Champagne and often a 48-hour stay parked in the ice at 90° North

An insider tip from Cindy: dress for the arrival, not the flight. It could be 90°F in Paris when you depart and 30°F when you land in Longyearbyen — pack your parka in your carry-on.

What’s Included in a Ponant All-Inclusive Expedition Cruise

Ponant is a genuinely all-inclusive luxury experience. Here is what comes with your fare:

  • All meals, including specialty dining — no upcharges ever
  • All alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, open bar, 24/7 room service
  • Port fees and taxes
  • Gratuities
  • Starlink Wi-Fi across the entire fleet — multiple devices, no additional fee
  • Butler service on larger suite categories
  • One included shore excursion per person per day on traditional itineraries
  • All expedition activities on polar departures — kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, Zodiac cruises
  • A warm waterproof parka to keep (orange on the Charcot, red on sister ships)
  • Insulated waterproof boots to borrow for the duration

The one experience that carries an additional cost is the exclusive overnight camping excursion in Greenland — a dog sled journey with meals prepared on the ice, limited to roughly 10 guests, running around $1,000. It reliably sells out, so book it the moment you board.

Onboard credits (such as your Luxury Cruise Connections Virtuoso amenity) can be used toward the spa, select premium wines, and boutique purchases.

Common Questions About Luxury Polar Cruising

Is it really that cold?

Polar expeditions depart during the height of each hemisphere’s summer. Between the provided parka, borrowed boots, and waterproof pants you bring from home, you will be well prepared. Cindy has stood in emperor penguin colonies without a jacket on.

Real-time satellite weather forecasting has transformed the crossing. Ships now slow down, speed up, or wait for storms to pass rather than pushing through. Modern stabilizers make a significant difference. The Drake is part of the journey — but it should not be the reason you hesitate on an Antarctica expedition cruise.

Boarding is done from a large, dedicated landing deck with a seaman to assist. As Cindy puts it: if you can get in and out of a bathtub, you can board a Zodiac.

English and French are both official onboard languages. If language is a concern, Smithsonian Journeys departures are conducted entirely in English, with two Smithsonian Institute experts hosting each voyage. Cindy — who has spent more than 100 days per year on Ponant ships for five years — does not speak French.

Polar Expedition Packing List: Cindy's Four Non-Negotiables

After hundreds of polar expedition days, these are Cindy’s essentials:

Waterproof pants with full-length zippers

Not ski pants — rain pants that go over your insulated boots. The zipper is essential; elastic ankle openings do not work over expedition footwear.

A waterproof camera cover

This applies to smartphones too, regardless of manufacturer waterproofing claims.

Tech gloves

Gloves with touchscreen-compatible fingertip pads let you use your phone and camera without removing them in freezing temperatures.

A phone strap with neck or wrist attachment

Cindy has seen guests drop phones into the ocean on nearly every departure. A $10 strap from Amazon is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Beyond the Poles: Ponant’s Full World

While polar expedition cruises are the signature of Le Commandant Charcot, Ponant’s 12-ship fleet spans the globe. The smallest ship, Le Ponant, carries just 32 guests; the largest sister ships hold up to 264. All are small ship luxury cruises in the truest sense.

Expedition itineraries include polar regions, Papua New Guinea, the Kimberley Coast of Australia, Madagascar, and the Galapagos.

Discovery itineraries blend Zodiac landings with traditional port calls — particularly popular in Indonesia, the South Pacific, and Baja California, where guests choose one included excursion per day at cultural stops while naturalists lead remote wildlife encounters.

Timeless itineraries cover the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Americas, and Asia — with one included excursion per person per day and the same all-inclusive luxury throughout.

Alliance partnerships with Smithsonian Journeys, the Explorers Club, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution add expert guest lecturers, hands-on science participation, and cultural depth that elevate every voyage.

Solo Travelers: Ponant’s No-Single-Supplement Program

Ponant’s no-single-supplement program is among the most generous in the industry. More than 129 departures are currently listed on the Ponant website with no single supplement — across cabin categories, with sailings running through October 2028. Solo travelers can select any available cabin in the offer, not a limited below-decks option with a porthole. For anyone who travels alone, this is one of the best deals in luxury expedition cruising today.

Loyalty Status Match: Already Loyal to Another Line?

If you have been sailing with another cruise line for years and worry about losing your status, Ponant’s Loyalty Status Match program matches your tier from 20 different cruise lines — starting from your very first cruise with them. You arrive as a loyal guest from day one.
