It has been 25 years since Viking set the standard for River Cruising. They carried that same ambition to Ocean Cruising after becoming the leading River Cruise Line. Now #1 rated, Viking is poised to conquer the Expedition Cruise Market, with their state-of-the-art Viking Octantis. We go aboard and show you everything we love about this marvelous new ship.
The Ship
Viking has put its competitors on notice with the Octantis. This ship is a statement to all that they will not be outmuscled by their competition. The Octantis is a technological powerhouse. Housing 378 guests, 256 crew, and packed with expedition technology. Octantis has an onboard science lab, a Polar Class 6 Hull, a submarine, and several other exciting features we will elaborate on further along in the article.
The Science Lab
True to Viking’s core values of providing context and education to their destinations through onboard education, the designers have included a science lab onboard the Octantis. A wet and dry research lab that encourages guest interaction while scientists perform research onboard. Overlooking another of our favorite features, the Hangar, guests and researchers alike will be able to look out at the launch pad for their research and adventures alike.
The Aula & Finse Terrace
Further evidence of Viking’s commitment to being “the thinking person’s cruise,” Viking’s designers have created the Aula Theater. The world’s most advanced onboard learning theater provides inquisitive guests with stunning 270-degree, floor-to-ceiling, panoramic views. The theater also features a retractable 4k, laser projected screen. The Aula will host films, lectures, and presentations providing guests with previously unheard-of destination enrichment.
Directly outside the Aula Theater is the Finse Terrace, a large patio and observation deck. Complete with heated seating, this onboard greenspace is also home to a lava-rock “fireplace,” making it an excellent location for guests to gather and reflect on their experiences of the day.
The Hangar
An industry first, guests on the Viking Octantis will embark on their expeditions from the onboard hangar. Rather than board zodiacs from the side of a rocking vessel, guests will board their rigid inflatable tenders inside the ship and be lowered down a ramp into the sea. This allows for the greatest ease and accessibility for daily exploration. The Hangar is also home to Viking’s ace-in-the-hole, but we will discuss that in a moment.
The Submarine
Another first of its class is the inclusion of a submersible submarine. From the Hangar guest can board this vessel for a dive beneath the surface to experience their destinations from an entirely new perspective. While helicopters have made their way into this market, Viking has the first submersible outside of the highest luxury brands. This feature is Viking’s trump card and will put pressure on competitors to match this technology on their future ships.
The Itineraries
Viking has created some amazing new itineraries to experience aboard the Octantis. In addition to excellent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, Viking has created a series of Great Lakes Expeditions in the United States and Canada, and they have already announced three exciting longitudinal, world expedition cruise itineraries.
Having established itself as a household name in both river and ocean cruising, Viking is well on its way to applying the same winning formula to its new expedition vessels. The Octantis is expecting a sister in the Viking Polaris already so it is clear that the demand for this product is high.
