Imagine five fresh-water, inland seas left behind from the last ice age. Picture waterways spawning massive commercial centers and modern cities. What if these bodies of water housed the continent's largest waterfall, which pours 42 million gallons of water 20 stories every minute? What if someone could see these amazing places on a cruise?
These are North America’s Great Lakes. The history of modern Canada and the United States is intrinsically linked to these massive bodies of water. Their shores are home to great cities of design, art, commerce, and industry. Along their banks rises awe-inspiring beauty and unspoiled wilderness. And– in their tributaries, you can see the indomitable will of man, as well as the unstoppable forces of nature. This is but a sample of the sights you will see on a cruise through The Great Lakes.
Lake Ontario
The skyline of modern Toronto rises from the banks of Lake Ontario. The capital city of the Canadian province which shares the lake’s name is home to nearly 3 million Canadians. Many itineraries begin here so guests can experience the architecture of the distillery district, visit museums, or take photos of sites like the CN Tower, the prominent spire-shaped tower that overlooks the bay.
Shipping between Lake Ontario and Lake Eerie must travel through the Welland Canal. The 8 locks raise and lower ships 326 feet between the two lakes. Construction on the canal began in 1824 as a vital safe shipping channel to avoid the peril of the Niagra river. Guests will traverse the modern canal on some itineraries.
The canal was constructed because of the massive cascade of Niagra Falls. The destination of choice to modern honeymooners and tourists from around the world. These towering falls push 42 million gallons of water over a 20-story plunge every minute. This natural wonder was once a navigational nightmare, explorers and daredevils alike have made their names or met their ruin trying to dominate these raging waters. While we don’t recommend you ride a barrel over them, we do recommend you select an itinerary that visits them. Niagra Falls is a must-see destination.
Lake Eerie
On the shores of Lake Eerie is Cleveland. One of America's great industrial cities and vital ports on the Great Lakes. Modern Cleveland is not just the ghost of LeBron James and Drew Carry reruns. The City lies on the doorsteps of 51 square miles of greenspace in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. These wetlands, forests, and canals provide guests with miles of hiking trails, panoramic vistas, and views of another beautiful waterfall, Brandywine Falls.
Lake Huron
A stop in the historic logging town of Alpena, Michigan, the lower peninsula’s 2nd largest city allows guests to visit the Alpena Light. A massive red steel lighthouse on the Northend of the Alpena Harbor. This and the 2nd architectural gem in Alpina, the Art Deco Courthouse, make excellent photo opportunities.
Lake Huron also houses the picturesque city of Thunder Bay. One of the most naturally beautiful locations you can choose to visit. Wander the waterfront for views across the Bay of the Sleeping Giant and take photos of the natural granite formation for which it is named.
Mackinac Island lies at the mouth of the waterway between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. This picturesque town is home to well-preserved Victorian architecture. Visitors are transported to simpler times as they ride horse-drawn carriages through streets with no cars.
Lake Michigan
Traverse City is another excellent opportunity for hiking and exploration. The clear waters and dunes provide guests with an excellent time outdoors. Nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pyramid Point make great excursions for active travelers.
Chicago Illinois, the greatest city in the American Midwest, lies on the coast of Lake Michigan. This city of giants is home to massive skyscrapers, excellent dining, and shopping opportunities. Chicago also houses the Field Museum one of the United States' best natural history museums. Visitors will quickly find that there is so much more to this city than a deep-dish pizza.
Lake Superior
At the mouth of Lake Superior lies Sault Sainte Marie. Founded in the 1600s this is Michigan’s oldest city. Home to the Soo locks, a series of canals linking Lake Superior to Lake Huron and effectively giving the lower great lakes access to the Atlantic Ocean for shipping, this engineering marvel is still a vital transportation avenue for modern shipping and a notable port on some itineraries.
It is clear to see that the Great Lakes hold many diverse opportunities for travel. There are many more destinations waiting to be explored and several excellent brands are sailing to these locations now. We all know how tedious it can be sorting through itineraries and brands, trying to find that perfect cruise.
